Muse Group is hiring a C++ Developer for the MuseScore Studio team, working primarily on music engraving in a large, long-lived open-source desktop codebase. Based in Cyprus or elsewhere in Europe.
About the role
A hands-on, independent contributor role with a lot of autonomy. You will take on ambiguous, complex problems and carry them from design through shipping and long-term maintenance. MuseScore Studio is a free, open-source notation program; Muse Group also owns Hal Leonard, a sheet music publisher.
Required experience
- Substantial professional software development experience, including modern C++ in a large, long-lived, performance-sensitive desktop codebase.
- Ownership of work end to end: design, delivery and maintenance.
- Commitment to code quality and sound architectural judgment.
- Experience with object-oriented programming and domain model design.
- Ability to read fairly complex sheet music, with good music theory knowledge.
- Clear, collaborative communication, working asynchronously across a global team.
- Thoughtful use of AI coding tools, knowing when they are the right fit.
- Strong attention to detail, since engraving flaws are immediately visible to musicians.
- An eye for visual design and good-looking scores.
Desirable
- Hands-on experience with MuseScore Studio or a competing notation tool, as a user, arranger or composer.
- MIDI and synthesizer experience.
- Asynchronous and multi-threaded programming experience.
- Experience with fonts, specifically FreeType.
- Rendering and OpenGL experience.
Bonus points
- Experience working on engraving for music composition software or a music publisher.
